Clubsy - Location Tracking App

User Interface Prototype
Two groupmates (Michelle and Elgene) and I were tasked to create a location tracking app prototype for the subject 'Fundamentals of Interaction Design'. We all worked together from creating the idea, conducting research, making the low-fidelity and high-fidelity prototype, to testing the usability of the prototype.

Design Process

  • Ideation - Referring to existing location-tracking applications (Life360, Zenly, Snapchat) to identify existing issues. Researching the target audience and also note issues they face. Listing down core features of location-tracking apps and core themes that need to be addressed.
  • User Research - Conducting surveys and interviews on what the target audience look for in a location tracking app, their feedback on existing tracking apps, and what features would they use most.
  • Personas and User Scenarios - Compile research to create personas and user scenarios that reflect the various possible uses of a location-tracking app and ensure a realistic, user-focused prototype.
  • Storyboarding - Creating a storyboard of the potential user flow.
  • Paper Prototyping- Creating a paper prototype of the application to ensure that features are necessary and is easily accessible.
  • High Fidelity Prototyping on Figma - Creating the first iteration of Clubsy's mobile and smartwatch prototype based on feedback gathered from the paper prototype.
  • Usability Testing - Conducting user observation, interviews, and cognitive walkthroughs using the first iteration of the prototype to identify issues and to ensure that the user's needs have been addressed.
  • Finalizing - Repeat usability testing and keep improving the prototype based on feedback to create the final iteration of Clubsy.

Sample User Scenario

Thomas, 20, is a university student in Australia who wants to socialize more. He finds clubs and bars to be a bit daunting, fearing that he might get separated from his friends inside and get into a dangerous situation. Every time Thomas goes out, he ends up being added to a new group chat, containing only the people going out that night. Due to this, Thomas finds it hard to keep track of which group chat is for which night. Additionally, Thomas also sometimes scrolls through the chats too fast and ends up at the wrong location because he missed the texts where the location has been changed.

To solve his issues and relieve his fears, Thomas uses Clubsy, a location-tracking app with all the built-in features he needs.

Features:

When users want to go out together, they add the people they are going out with into a group.

On the group page, users are able to see their fellow groupmates' heartrate and access a compass-like feature by pressing 'Find' that helps them find their friends and notify them that the user is on the way.

In emergency situations, users are able to alert friends to help them through the alert button on the bottom left. When a friend sends an alert, the user receives a long notification through their phone or smartwatch.

To create a new group, press the plus button on the home page, on the left. Users are then prompted to name the group, pick the group's destination, and add friends into the group.

Once created, the group's icon will appear on the top left of the home page, which opens the group's page.

On the home page, users can also access their profile,  achievements, friends, messages, and settings.

Since another goal of Clubsy is to incentivize users to go out and visit new places, users are rewarded by points when they engage in social activities. As seen on the left, different achievements such as meeting a new friend and visiting a new place gives the users points.

They are then able to get a higher ranked badge after a certain number of points and climb up the leaderboard, which compared the user with their friends.

The badge and demographics can be seen in the user profile, on the right.

Users are also able to see their friends and connect with other users through the friends page, on the left.

Rather than creating a group chat in another messaging app, Clubsy allows users to effectively message and call within Clubsy itself, with the group chat easily accessible on the group page.

To reduce clutters of inactive group chats, Clubsy allows for users to decide when the messages are deleted, may that be immediately when the group is ended or after a certain number of days.
